July 11th, back on the Skydeck rooftop for another Nashtyville Thursday - Nashville's largest rooftop patio & bar, Level 3 of Assembly Food Hall at 5055 Broadway Place, room for up to 1,600 people over the downtown skyline. Six weeks removed from the last documented night in May, this is the fifth of the residency's seven Thursdays, and the look has moved from the rooftop deck down onto the stage itself.
TACTICAL PAYLOAD is six frames in the fog - a black tee under a layered tactical chest rig, cargo shorts, a military-style backpack strapped on through the whole set, the blue-grey stage lighting diffusing into a haze behind him. This is the visual language the catalog runs on: tactical, intentional, heavy, built for a set that doesn't let up. Where Blood Diamonds On Broadway opened on the rooftop and worked its way to the stage, this one starts and stays there - no rooftop half at all, just six frames of a set in progress.

Four of these five are headed for an upcoming release - not yet announced, so no link to give here, but worth flagging: most of this setlist won't stay unreleased much longer. Only "Watch" has no stated destination yet. That puts this stretch of the residency in the same pattern as the May shows: material getting run in front of a Broadway rooftop crowd months, sometimes years, before it has a release date attached to it.

What "Tactical Payload" means
Four out of five songs from one Thursday night lined up for a real release is the clearest evidence yet of what this stage was actually for: not a showcase, but a workshop with an audience in it, where most of what got tested here eventually found a home on a record. That's the residency's whole thesis in one setlist - by the time the season wrapped, the pattern had repeated often enough to stop looking like a coincidence.
Skydeck let an independent, self-directed artist hold down a real weekly spot in his own city for a season - not a small thing in a city where the music industry's default image runs almost entirely through country radio. Two Thursdays remained after this one; the rig stayed on, the fog stayed thick, and the setlists kept turning over.
