Candles on the floor. UV light. The ritual.
The Forlorn cycle was Alpha The Wolf's 2024 turn inward - a Trap-Soul and R&B record whose title it prints as a dictionary entry: bereft, forsaken, desolate. Dancer is the shoot built for one cut off it, the "Dancer Freestyle" single. Thirty-two frames catalogued Jun. 21, 2024, shot inside his own home - a darkened stairwell and hall lit almost entirely by dozens of floor candles in two symmetrical clusters, a violet UV wash filling the rest and a mural projected high on the back wall. The Nashville artist works it in a dark cape with a pearl necklace and an iced chain, then a white outfit seated among the flames.
The set moves in stages. It opens on title-card frames with the Japanese wordmark ダンサーフリースタイル set across the haze, then a long run on the candlelit staircase - crouched at the foot of it wrapped in the cape, seated low with a hand reaching for the bottom step, the iced chain flaring under the UV. Then the cape comes off for a white-outfit stretch cross-legged on the floor at the center of the candle ring, head bowed, hands clasped. A handful of stark black-and-white frames close it, his shadow thrown huge across a white wall while he stands out of shot.
"Dancer Freestyle" sits fourth on Forlorn, between "Fiya" and "Patience," and carries its own single art - a silhouetted dancer mid-movement over hand-drawn hearts - and an official visual. The katakana nameplate layered onto these frames is the same device that runs through the catalogue, the persona billed as ロンドン・イン・東京 and アルファ・ザ・オオカミ. Nothing about the room is permanent, and the room is his own - the candles were set, lit, shot and put out, and the stairwell went back to being a stairwell the next morning; the altar was built for one night and nothing else.
The white-outfit frames are the warmest in the set - candlelight close on the hands and face, the background gone to black on both sides.
What "Dancer" means
The song is called "Dancer" and the shoot refuses to stage a dance floor. It builds a rite instead - a circle of flame, a bowed head, a projected congregation on the wall, one figure moving slow through the middle of it. In the wolf's scripture the VOID "opened its maw and promised to consume all," and a room lit only by candles against that much dark is a fair picture of holding a small light inside a large absence. Forlorn is the loneliest record in the catalogue; Dancer is its liturgy.
