Broadway rooftops. Blue hour. Pearl chain.
Sushi and Rooftops is built on a deadline the light sets - five frames made on the open-air patio at Blue Sushi Sake Grill, the Fifth + Broadway location, in the short window after sunset, with Lower Broadway's neon strip of bars, honky-tonks and high-rises blurred to bokeh behind him. The Nashville artist works one look the whole time: an all-black long-sleeve, a pearl chain, a black cap and small round tinted shades.
The set works a narrow range from one position. He leans on the parapet facing the lens; turns profile with his chin lifted and the shades on; drops into a tight three-quarter with the cap brim covering his eyes and the city dissolved to colored bokeh.
Then two frames turn his back to the camera - the silhouette of the black cap with braids trailing down, set against the wide skyline as warm and cool light smears across the horizon.
Lower Broadway is the honky-tonk core of downtown Nashville, bar signs stacked block to block, the stretch that reads instantly as Music City. Rooftop portraits over it are a recurring move in the catalogue - months later the Skydeck On Broadway residency put Alpha on Nashville's largest rooftop patio for a live shoot. The pearl chain is its own thread, worn from stage sets to studio nights. The sushi never makes the frame, but the restaurant is exactly where he's standing.
It closes with a glance back over the shoulder, a gold chain against the black jacket, downtown towers rising in the soft blue distance.
What "Sushi and Rooftops" means
The title names two luxuries - a good meal and a high view - and the shoot only spends time on one. Blue hour is the cheapest expensive thing there is: fifteen minutes, no ticket, and the whole skyline turns cinematic on its own. The wolf takes the roof and lets the city do the lighting. It is the calm, moneyed register of the catalogue, shot in the last light before the neon takes over.
