Remixing the Record - Photoshoot

October 7, 2024. Eleven frames back at The Record Shop in La Vergne, Tennessee - the same control room as Scratching the Record five months earlier, this time for the mix and remix sessions on the same batch of songs. Sean Giovanni opened The Record Shop in 2004 and built it around the idea it still runs on: the client's vision first, an hourly meter second, with free pre-production consultations built in. The facility is a large tracking room, a deep collection of classic analog gear, Pro Tools HDX, and a broad set of mics and instruments; John Rich has said he cut numerous #1 Billboard songs there. For Alpha it was a booked room with a producer in it - the place where a stack of one-take freestyles got turned into finished records.

Most of the frames are two people at a board. Alpha leaned back with a hand raised mid-idea, the producer bent toward the screen; both of them squinting at the same arrangement; a gold watch, a pearl chain, a beaded bracelet, the colored faders of a large-format console running the width of the shot. Same register as the May session - work, not poses.

A frame from the sessions went up on Instagram that fall, tagged in Nashville, with the credit going to the room it was cut in: "Heartfelt love to the @therecordshopstudios… a man nor a wolf is an island." (view the post)

What "Remixing the Record" means

A remix pulls a finished thing back to its parts and puts it together a second way - same source, different build. Where Scratching the Record caught the rough pass, this is that material months on, opened up on the screen and reassembled with the room's producer at the desk. Same console, same city, same songs - later in their life. The freestyle is where it starts. This is where it gets shaped.
