Nashville, TN — Nov. 1, 2024 — "Moons" is Alpha The Wolf at his most unadorned. Announced in early October and out since October 18, the single trades hooks for atmosphere and a title that's really nine emoji tracking a full lunar cycle: 🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑. It dropped the same day with a reel carrying the whole pitch in four lines: "Moons Freestyle // 月 — The VOID cannot be contained!" (view the reel)
He's called it a premonition before — ethereal, ghostly, a harbinger of dark deeds — and the description undersells how little the track explains itself. There's no hook built to be sung back, no clean narrative arc; it's Alpha The Wolf "brooding on the production," in his own words, sharing a glimpse of his animosity rather than laying it out. That opacity is the point. The genre tags he attached to it directly — Ambient, Trap, Rage — describe a record built to sit in a mood rather than resolve one.
The Jin-Roh connection
Three months after the single, in mid-January 2025, editor @shotbyclaudius paired "Moons" with footage from Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade — Hiroyuki Okiura's 1999 film about a masked special-forces unit inside a militarized, alternate-history Japan — for a 2:14 anime edit now hosted on the site's collab page (view on Instagram).
The pairing isn't a stretch. Jin-Roh retells "Little Red Riding Hood" through its Kerberos unit's wolf-masked riot troopers, a story about violence dressed as protection running underneath a grey, dystopian occupation. Set next to Alpha The Wolf's own wolf branding and a single he's already framed as a dark omen, the anime edit isn't decoration — it's the same mythology, borrowed footage instead of borrowed words. It's also the earliest of three Alpha The Wolf edits from @shotbyclaudius, who'd go on to cut the "Beams" AMV against Rurouni Kenshin and an alternate cut of "Serp" the following year.
What "Moons" means
Taken together, the single and the edit that followed it read like two halves of the same idea released three months apart — one in sound, one in footage neither of them made from scratch. "Moons" doesn't function as a lead single or an obvious hit; it functions as tone-setting, the kind of release an artist puts out to mark a shift before naming it outright. The wolf mythology that runs through Alpha The Wolf's branding — the howling logo on Forlorn, the masked figure on "Beams" — found one of its clearest visual matches here, on loan from a 25-year-old anime film about a different wolf brigade entirely.
