ATL boutique. Fashion Killa. The chair.
Atlanta runs through Alpha The Wolf's catalogue as its own thread, and Shadows in ATL is one of the shorter entries - three frames shot inside Ponce City Market, the food-hall-and-retail complex on the Atlanta BeltLine, with racks of colorful fabric, storefront glass and exposed brick. He was in town on business for the SEA award show, not a performance date - the same trip that produced Lanta' Lanes. The Nashville artist works a black velvet hoodie pulled up, layered pearl necklaces, round tinted sunglasses, a diamond-style chain and a crossbody tactical bag.
Two of the three build around the book. He holds it up two-handed like he is presenting it, head bowed over the cover; then squares to the camera with it raised chest-high, expression flat behind the shades. The third frame leaves the retail floor - dropped low into a blue velvet chair, arm over one knee, a dark-leafed plant spilling over his shoulder, a vintage typewriter at his side and a photographer at work in the warm lamp glow behind him.
He posted from the visit himself: "While in town for the SEA award show, I stopped by Atlanta's @poncecitymarket where I ran into @sowmyak's debut book! Fashion Killa, a tantalizing read. Inside, she discusses hip-hops fashion evolution beginning with deep dives exploring urban streetwear and the culminating impact leading to major influence on global fashion as a whole. As a fashion enthusiast myself, I felt Sowmya's work deserved a moment of recognition as hip-hop has left its mark on every facet of the culture." (view the post)
Fashion Killa: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion is music journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy's 2023 history, published by Gallery Books and named a Pitchfork Best Music Book of 2024, tracing the line from Dapper Dan's Harlem workroom to Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton. This same SEA award show trip also produced a dim booth in an Atlanta bar; a separate Atlanta trip, for The Solo Dolo Experience, produced the Botanical Garden shoot.
What "Shadows in ATL" means
The shadows are literal - a hood up indoors, tinted shades in low lamplight, a face kept half-dark in every frame. The title pairs that with the city, and the shoot spends its three frames inside, in a store, reading rather than performing. In the wolf's telling the pack and the father's wisdom travel with him; here that reads as a quiet stop on a road trip, book in hand, in a room that already speaks the language.
