Candle on marble. Tactical vest. Dinner service.
Bad Sushi was shot at 888 Nashville, an award-winning Japanese restaurant and vinyl listening lounge - an Edomae sushi counter under chef Kiichi Okabe, a kitchen program of donabe, wagyu and tempura, and some 2,000 soul, funk and jazz records lining the walls. Nine frames from a late table, the ceiling packed with round amber dish lamps that stack into rows toward the back of the room, shot almost entirely by the votive candle burning at the front edge of the marble table. The Nashville artist works a black tactical harness with a yellow accent cord over a Fabric Of The Universe tee - dressed for something other than dinner.
The candle does all the modelling. It throws the harness straps and the lettering on the tee into hard relief and drops everything past his shoulder into warm blur - other diners, a standing figure, staff working the bar station at the edge of frame. He barely moves across the nine: chin on a fist with a gold watch showing, a flat level look down the lens, a slow turn away into the dark.
Fabric Of The Universe is a Los Angeles techwear label built on cyberpunk and Japanese-streetwear lines, and its lettering recurs across the catalogue - worn on stage for Assault Ops and through the Perimeters shoot the same winter. Here the rig sits over a white tablecloth, with cutlery and a small dish in the foreground.
One frame goes vertical - the harness filling the chest, the dish lamps doubling into soft circles overhead, a service terminal glowing blue behind his shoulder.
What "Bad Sushi" means
The title reads like a bad night out - a raw dinner that turns on you - and the joke only works because the food is the opposite of that. 888 is an award-winning room; nobody eating there that night was worried about the sushi. The fit answers a threat that was never in the restaurant: body armour at a nice table is a posture, ready for something to go wrong that has nothing to do with the meal, dressed to leave in a hurry, keeping the exits in view past the candle. In the wolf's telling he shows up where he was not invited and does not relax once he is there. Even at a good table, harness on, watching the room.
